All About Alava Province

Where To Stay and What To See And Do

Despite being the largest of the three Basque provinces, Alava Province is also the least populated, making it an often unspoilt paradise.

The province is a transitional zone located between the Cantabrian mountains and the Castilian flatlands and this mixed geography gives it a very particular climate - humid and rainy in the mountains and much drier and almost Mediterranean in the south.

The provincial capital - Vitoria-Gasteiz - is also the capital of the Basque Autonomous Community. Vitoria is a lovely gentle city and is central main square - La Plaza de la Virgen Blanca - is a delight.

I particularly like its religious buildings - the gothic Iglesia de San Pedro Apóstol and the Old and New Cathedrals are worthy of note.

You should also visit the Palaces of Esoriaza-Esquivel and of Ajuria-Enea - the seat of the Basque government.

But to get the best from Álava Province you have to get out into the countryside, which is more or less equally divided into three zones.

In the north-west, you'll find the mountainous region of Alto Nervión, which is centred on the towns of Llodio and Amurrio. The zone is perfect for hikers and an itinerary between the two aforementioned towns along the banks of the River Nervión makes for a very exacting excursion.

The central flatlands between Vitoria and Salvatierra are also worth exploring but my favourite area is the rich agricultural region in the south, which borders on La Rioja and is known as La Rioja Alavesa. Not surprisingly, you get particularly good local wines around these parts.

And what can you say about the food? Snails in sauce, broad beans with ham, baby eels from Lapuebla de Labarca, perretxikos and zurracapote and for dessert, dulces de Vitoria - delicious!
