All About Alicante Province

Where To Stay and What To See And Do

The coast of Alicante province is part of Costa Blanca and boasts 160 km of beaches that look out onto the warm Mediterranean Sea.

The Alicante coast offers not only extensive sand beaches but also allows you to discover incredible rocky coves for scuba diving, dunes backed by pinewood forests, pebbly bays and the chance to take out a small boat.

The coast north of Alicante to Denia stretches for about 100km and between the major resorts you'll find many secluded spots and a lot of interesting places to visit.

The first place to stop is El Campello with its lovely beach and characteristic scenery.

Further up the coast is the very pleasant Villajoyosa followed by Benidorm - the mega-resort of the Costa Blanca.

I particularly like the northern stretch of Alicante coast north of Benidorm. Alfās del Pi, Altea and then the section up to Calpe, Jāvea and Denia is full of variety - beaches, cliffs, bays and a healthy sprinkling of lighthouses and Gothic castles, which take you back to times of pirates and battles against the Moors.

Apart from great beaches, the highlight of the road south to Pilar de Horadada are the salt marshes between Santa Pola and Torrevieja, which are home to some wonderful species of birds - watching the flocks of flamingos fishing at sunset is a sight not to be missed.

It's also worth exploring the mountainous interior of Alicante Province where you'll find even more castles. I particularly like the medieval town centre of Cocentaina and the forest of palm trees at El Palmeral near Elche - declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO and very close to the airport.
