All About Almeria Province

Where To Stay and What To See And Do

Apart from some great beaches, Almeria province is best-known for its desert landscape and climate which made it an ideal setting for for the spaguetti Western films of the 1960s.

Near the Desert of Tabernas you can visit Wild West towns that were used as locations for The Good, the Bad and the Ugly and A Fistful of Dollars and much later 800 Bullets.

Large sections of Lawrence of Arabia and Patton were shot in the region as well.

Surprisingly, the hot climate and the natural protective barrier of the Sierra de Gador also makes Almeria one of the most productive agricultural zones in Europe, with more than 10,000 hectares of land cultivated commercially for fruit, vegetables and flowers.

If you are looking for peaceful coves and sand dunes, unspoilt beaches, imposing mountain cliffs, charming villages and deep waters ideal for swimming or diving, you should head for the Cabo de Gata-Níjar Natural Park between San José and Carboneras on the eastern coast.

San José boasts outstanding beaches, such as Los Genoveses, Mònsul, Media Luna and Barronal and El Playazo at Rodalquilar, Playa de los Muertos at Carboneras, and Cala Raja at Cabo de Gata also deserve a special mention.

Almeria itself was one of the most important ports of Caliphate of Cordoba and the grandeur of its cathedral and the sumptuous Moorish Alcazaba citadel framed by narrow streets and whitewashed houses of the historic quarter are a poignant testimony to its distant Arabic origins.

If you decide to explore the interior, be sure to visit the Desierto de Tabernas, Alpujarra-Puerto de la Ragua and the Pueblos Blancos - the White Villages around Velez Rubio and Velez Blanco, where you can see neolithic cave paintings and burial sites and the famous church of La Encarnación - now a national monument.
