Obligatory Dress Code In The Cathedral of Football

Athletic Bilbao shirts as worn by Athletic Club belong to the oldest club in Spain and their stadium - San Mamés - is known as 'the Cathedral of Football'.
Athletic Bilbao have never been out of the Primera Liga, even though the club only fields Basque players - very difficult in these post-Bosman days!
Athletic Bilbao shirts were originally blue and white but were changed to red and white stripes in honour of Sunderland and Southampton - the clubs of the engineers and
shipworkers who had introduced football in the Basque country.

As you can appreciate, Athletic Bilbao are a club with an enormous amount of pride and tradition.
Athletic Bilbao Home Strip
The Athletic Bilbao home shirt is a beautiful traditional shirt in red and white stripes - just perfect of a team nicknamed 'The Lions'.
I particularly like the way it looks against the black shorts - very heroic.
Heroic, solid, traditional are adjectives that one could apply here, but interestingly the shirt has been worn by two of Spanish football's biggest hearthrobs -
Julen Guerrero in the nineties and Fernando Llorente in the current squad.
I don't know why this is but an Athletic Club shirt definitely seems to turn the ladies on.
The 2008-09 shirt was almost impossible to get hold of but my supplier assures me that Athletic Bilbao
shirts will be available next season.
Athletic Bilbao Away Strip

I also like the simple dark blue of the Athletic Bilbao Away Shirt.
Given a choice, though, I wouldn't buy one with the sponsor name - Petronor - on it.
The 2008-09 season was the first that Athletic Club accepted sponsorship on their shirts and - please remember that I'm something of a traditionalist when it comes tp
football gear - I wish they hadn't.

Athletic Bilbao Retro Shirts

The Bilbao Retro Shirts are absolutely gorgeous.
I particularly like the pre-war model, which you can see in the picture. It is styled very much like a normal shirt and takes you back to the hazy days of
when the beautiful game was beautiful.
A 1950s design is also available. The special centenary shirt is in blue and white and is a replica of the shirt Athletic Club originally wore in 1898.

The picture shows the pre-war design and the supplier tells me that more models will be available in the near future.
