Athletic Club de Bilbao

The Lions Of San Mames

Athletic Club de Bilbao's Copa del Rey final against Barcelona was the highlight of the 2008-09 which the Basque side finished in mid-table positions.

The policy of fielding only Basque players makes coach Joaquin Caparros's job more difficult in a post-Bosman age.

But the Basque cantera has a long tradition of producing good players and with Iraizoz in goals, Fran Yeste in midfield and Fernando Llorente up front, Athletic Bilbao have a strong physical side.

A visit to San Mames is a Big Game for all clubs and Bilbao are one of only three Spanish clubs never to have been relegated to Segunda.

Athletic de Bilbao last won La Liga in 1984 - when they also won the Copa del Rey - and last season's Cup run should give them the confidence to be battling for European positions in 2009-10.

Watching Athletic Club de Bilbao

The legendary 40,000-capacity San Mames - known as La Catedral - opened in 1913 and is Spain's oldest ground.

For most games, getting seats on match day is generally fairly easy - the obvious exceptions are the games against FC Barcelona and Real Madrid but other clubs from Northern Spain - Racing, Deportivo and Sporting - draw big crowds on a good day.

San Mamés is located close on the banks of the River Nervión and, with its own metro station, is well-served by public transport.

Bilbao is a fantastic city set on the impressive Bay of Biscay and home to the fabulous Guggenheim Museum. The Basque Country is blessed with excellent food and plenty of good places to stay.
