Atletico Madrid Shirts
Mattress-Making Modernity from Madrid
|
The story behind Atletico Madrid shirts is an interesting one.
The club was actually founded by three Athletic Bilbao supporters who were studying in Madrid - that's why the two clubs play in the same colours.
The Madrid story behind where the colour of the Atletico Madrid shirts comes from is different from the Basque one and goes like this.
|
 |
At the turn of the century, mattress covers were typically made of red and white striped material and, as there were a lot of mattress factories in the
area where the Atlético de Madrid fans came from, a canny madrileño decided to buy up a bulk lot of this material and make Atletico shirts out of it because
it was cheap.
Whether this is true or not, I don't know but it means that Atlético stake a claim to the shirts and also explains the origins of the club's nickname, 'Los
Colchoneros' - The Mattress Makers!
Atletico Madrid Home Strip
The Atletico Madrid home shirt is a beautiful traditional shirt in red and white stripes, and the shorts are a vibrant blue.
I particularly like Atlético's badge with its bear and stars and the Nike logo also looks very good on Atletico Madrid shirts.
As Atlético are such a popular club a full range of kit is easily available as are named shirts - Kun AgÚero and Diego Forlán are by far the easiest to get
hold of. However, speaking personally, I'd like to see more marketing for Simao Sabrosa - the real key to the success of the team.
Whichever Atletico Madrid shirts you buy, by wearing one on your holiday in Madrid, you're making a strong statement in favour of the people's club in the city.
Atletico Madrid Away Strip
|
The Atletico Madrid away shirt comes in royal blue for the second strip and a navy - almost black - blue for the third kit.
Both are are but ,given a choice, I wouldn't buy one with the sponsor name - Kia - on it.
The bright blue, though, is very appealing and I can imagine wearing it whilst wandering round Madrid on a hot afternoon, whilst the navy blue model would make excellent evening wear.

Atletico Madrid Retro Shirts
|
The Atlético Retro Shirts are absolutely gorgeous.
I particularly like the original centenary model, which you can see in the picture. It is styled very much like a normal shirt and takes you back to the hazy days of
when the beautiful game was beautiful.
The red and white 1950s and 1960s designs are even nicer but were tempoarily out of stock when I built this page.

This is the centenary design in the original blue and white and the supplier tells me that the other models will be available in the future.
