Barcelona Province is inevitably dominated by its flamboyant capital city, but its much more than that.
With a coastline that stretches both north and south and nature reserves, rich farming land and historic towns in its hinterland, everything
you could ever wish for is extremely close at hand.
The magical city of Barcelona hardly needs an introduction - Modernist Gaudķ architecture, the Gothic city centre, a fabulous football team,
a pulsating nightlife and club scene, blue flag city beaches
. . . need I go on?
The city's barris or neighbourhoods were satellite villages a century ago and it's worth hopping on the Metro and visiting the old town centres
of Grącia, Sants or Sarrią.
A short train ride away on the edge of the city limits, you'll also find the amazing monastery of Sant Cugat, the Modernist route in Terrassa or the
emblematic mountains in the the Natural Park of Montseny.
The coastline north of the city is home to the Costa del Maresme with its great beaches and pumping urban centres of Badalona and Mataró, but I personally
prefer the southern coast.
If you take the road south of the airport, you soon come to the Costa del Garraf and the long sandy beaches of Castelldefels.
Sitges is the next main stop south. A bohemian artists hang-out a century ago, established as a holiday resort in the 1960s with loose attitudes openly
challenging Franco's regime and now a gay resort, it's always been a wonderful combination of hedonism and culture - wonderful beaches, fantastic nightlife, excellent
restaurants and first-class museums.
Wine buffs will love the southern section of Barcelona province. The inland town of Vilafranca is the centre of the Penedčs wine-growing region and further
inland Sant Sadurnķ is the self-styled capital of cava. Both host fascinating wine museums and most bodegas have guided tours and offer free samples, so
perhaps you should think about whether to take the car or not.
In central Catalonia but also within striking distance of the airport is the mountain and monastery of Montserrat with its weirdly shaped crags of rock. It's
one of the most spectacular sites in the whole of Spain and the legends that surround it make it the spiritual home of the Catalan nation.
The monastery's most important relic is the Black Virgin - La Moreneta - which was supposedly carved by Saint Luke and hidden by Saint Peter in a nearby cave.
Another legend associated with Montserrat is that it was where Parsifal found the Holy Grail.
Although now a popular tourist spot, Montserrat retains much of its magic and mystery and the truth is that Barcelona Province is quite simply a
magical place.
