Cadiz Province is one of the loveliest regions of Spain for many reasons - its gorgeous beaches, its breathtaking nature reserves and its
fine historic towns and cities.
With records suggesting that it has been occupied for more than 3,000 years, Cádiz is quite possibly the oldest city in Western Europe.
Cádiz is located on a
peninsula and has some lovely old weather-beaten houses that date back to the time when its port was used as a base for the conquest of the Americas.
Its
skyline is dominated by the Cathedral and its atmosphere is one of calm - except for a week in February where it hosts one of the craziest carnivals in
the world!
Other important towns include Jerez de la Frontera - the home of sherry - and La Linea de la Concepción, which borders with Gibraltar.
Inland are the famous
Pueblos Blancos - the White Villages.
Arcos de la Frontera, Zahara de la Sierra, Grazalema and Setenil are a series of small towns with chalk-coated houses
dating back to the Middle Ages.
Cádiz Province also boasts more blue flag beaches than any other province in Europe along its 250-kilometre shoreline, La Costa de la Luz - the Coast of
Light.
Here the coast is much better-preserved than the nearby Costa del Sol and its not only perfect for sunbathing but also birdwatching and scubadiving.
What's more the town of Tarifa is a world-acclaimed centre for windsurfing.
Much of the Cádiz Mediterranean coast - La Costa Gaditana Mediterranea is protected because of its wildlife and birds.
Nature reserves include the extensive Bahía de Cádiz Natural Park, covering
the beaches and
wetlands of Cadiz Bay, the Estrecho Natural Park along the Straits of Gibraltar from Algeciras to Bolonia with its important marine section and the Breña
and Marismas de Barbate Natural Park, the coastal cliffs and pine forests between Los Caños de Meca and Barbate as well as Barbate´s saltmarshes.
There are even more nature reserves inland most notably the Sierra de Grazelma National Park a small section of the Doñana National Park, which
Cádiz shares with Huelva and Seville. You'll find a
privileged biodiversity here, including vultures and eagles, and this great hiking territory is renowned for its rugged limestone landscape.
As you can see Cádiz Province offers much more than sun, sea and sand - it offers the visitor a complete Andalusian experience.
