Carles Puyol

The Great Captain Culé

An overview of Carles Puyol during FC Barcelona's triple championship winning 2008-09 season.

Puyol already has a track record of which any player would be proud but last season was something special.

The boy from La Pobla de Segur spent his first five years on the first team without raising one miserable trophy but since becoming captain five seasons ago everything has changed.

Puyi deserves the privilege of being the captain of the greatest Barça of all time - the Triple Champions - and what's more, he's the first Barcelona captain to lift the the Champions League twice.

He's fought on the front line of the 2008-09 in both footballing and emotional terms.

In footballing terms, Puyol has been vital on all three fronts - he played in both the Champions League and Copa del Rey finals and with the consistency of a stalwart disputed La Liga from start to finish.

And emotionally, Carles has savoured glory with humility, exemplifying the fibre culé that values hard work above superstar status.

A glance at Puyol's 2008-09 statistics give you an idea - 28 games in La Liga, 9 in the the Champions League and 6 in the Copa del Rey.

And with typical fair play, he has been on the receiving end of more fouls than he committed in all three competitions.

Few have been more involved in winning the treble - both in minutes played and in his ability to adapt to different defensive positions.

But if one image goes down in the annals of history, it will be of the Great Captain scoring in Santiago Bernabéu and then kissing the Catalan flag - La Senyera - on enemy territory.

Carles Puyol is already a legend of barcelonismo.
