Castellon Province is the northernmost of the Comunitat Valenciana's three provinces, and although best known for its glorious Costa del Azahar, it's one of the
most mountainous provinces in Spain so it's well-worth exploring inland.
The capital city - Castellón de la Plana - is set back very slightly from the coast on the edge of the mountains and is a great base for any holiday.
It's a quiet medium-sized
city with some very nice Gothic buildings, excellent food and a very gentle pace of life.
Just by the Port of Castellón, lies a 14-kilometre stretch of the Costa del Azahar, where the wide golden beaches are backed by
mountains, golf courses, hotels and everything a tourist could desire without ever going over the top.
This section is dominated by the more upbeat resort
of Benicassím, which does go completely over the top during
the month
of July when it hosts one of the most important music festivals in Spain - top International and Spanish acts in an absolutely fantastic setting - Brilliant!

Further up the coast is Oropesa and then Torreblanca. Apart from the excellent fine sand beaches, this section is backed by some breathtaking countryside
in the Prat de Cabanes-Torreblanca Natural Park.
Much further north - almost on the border with Catalonia - you come to Peñiscola and Benicarló. Peñiscola - home to an impressive
Templar fortress - is located on a rock prominotory,
linked to a sandy isthus and backed by the crags of the Sierra de Irta is one of the loveliest spots in Spain. Benicarló is almost as nice - I particularly like
the walk from the medieval town centre to the port and the beach.
While you're in the area, don't forget to try horchata de chufla - tiger nut milk - and drink plenty of the locally-produced fresh juice.
