An overview of Gerard Pique during FC Barcelona's triple championship winning 2008-09 season.

A year ago it looked as if Gerard Pique was coming to Barcelona to sit on the bench and wait for a chance, but his stats now show how important he was to the historic treble-winning side.

Only four of his teammates - Alves, Valdés, Xavi and Eto'o - played more than the young Catalan in the three competitions in 2008-09.

In the Champions League, Piqué was the second most used player after Valdés, making him the most used field player.

Unlike many members of the first team - who didn't play in the Copa del Rey - Piqué has played regularly in all three competitions.

Piqué understood perfectly what Guardiola wanted and Barça needed from Day One - rather than just defending his job is to make that first pass into the midfield, leapfrogging the role of the defensive midfield.

The young players technical capacity meant that he did the job so perfectly - both in terms of long and short passes - that alongside Márquez in the centre of the defence, he pushed the mighty Puyol out to left back to substitute the injured Abidal.

As far as goals are concerned, young Gerard scored three times in each of the three competitions.

And two of the goals were crucial - one against Espanyol in the Copa and another scorcher in 6-2 victory over Real Madrid in the Bernabéu.

In 2009-10, there will be certainly more goals as Piqué became increasingly dangerous when he joined the attack to add his height and physique in corners and free kicks.
