Granada Province

As soon as you leave Granada Airport, you will find yourself close to one of the most interesting parts of Granada province - La Vega del Genil was once a frontier territory between the Moorish kingdom of Granada and Christian Spain.

You can still see dramatically sited fortified villages, on rocky crags or hills overlooking the fertile plain. The most spectacular of these is Montefrio but there are many other lovely towns to explore.

The city of Granada itself was once the capital of the Caliphate of Granada and its magnificent Alhambra Palace is a testament to its importance. Today it's a charming town with winding streets that smell both of history and the best tapas in Spain.

The Sierra Nevada is only about an hour's drive from the capital and its all-year-round snow makes it ideal for skiing and other snow sports. The spectacular mountain range is also a National Park and Nature Reserve and at 11,000 feet above sea level, Mulhacen - the sierra's crowning glory - is the highest peak on the Iberian Peninsula.

One of the most amazing things about Granada Province is that the mountains are only about an hour's drive from the coast, so one moment you can be walking amongst snow-tipped peaks and the next you can be bathing in under the blazing sun of the Costa Tropical.

The Costa Tropical is much quieter than the nearby Costa del Sol and light winds from Africa, the warm waters of the Mediterranean and 320 days of sun a year make it an ideal spot for a holiday. The three main resorts are Amuñécar, Motril and Salobreña but there's a lot more to explore and the underwater flora and fauna also make this section of the coast a magnet for scuba divers.

The lovely countryside in the Gaudix-Marquesado area on the edge of the Alpujarras is also well-worth exploring. The Cathedral of Gaudix and the Castle of Calahorra are truly impressive but one of the most interesting architectural features of the region are the casa cuevas - the cave houses. AS the name suggests, they are dwellings built into the ground and some have been converted into fully-equipped three and four star hotels.

Granada Airport is also the gateway to the province and city of Jaén, which with its extensive olive groves is another of Spain's unspoilt delights.

Football in Granada Province

The city of Granada has two clubs - Granada CF and Granada 74 - and both play in Group IV of Segunda B. As you might expect there's a very healthy rivalry between them.

At the moment, they're a little overshadowed by nearby Real Jaén, who look like finishing in the promotion positions at the end of this season.

Granada and Jaén provinces also have a very lively amateur scene with many clubs competing in Tercera and in regional Federación Andaluza de Fútbol competitions.
