All About La Coruna Province

Where To Stay and What To See And Do

Although a lovely city itself, La Coruna province capital - A Coruña in Gallego - is overshadowed by the legendary Santiago de Compostela.

It is a good place to stay, though, with its fine port, medieval district and excellent seafood.

One of my favourite sites is the Torre de Hercules - the oldest lighthouse in the world.

Santiago de Compostela is an illustrious World Heritage Site and its history goes back at least to the ninth century.

Its Cathedral is the resting place of the apostle Saint James, which since medieval times has been the destination for Christian pilgrims on the Camino de Santiago - The Way of Saint James.

The Cathedral is far from Santiago's only outstanding architectural icon and the old town is full of dazzling examples of Gothic, Neo-classical, Romanesque and Baroque styles.

In comparison, the province's other main town - Ferrol - is a bit of a disappointment. It's a modern industrial city best-known as the birthplace of Spain's defunct dicator - General Francisco Franco.

La Coruña Province's Atlantic coast is truly breathtaking and is home to the Costa de Muerte - the Coast of Death.

Despite its less than enticing name, this section of the coast has lovely spots and the famous Galician rias are reminiscent of fjords making Galicia more reminiscent of Scandinavia than of Spain.

A place that should definitely be included in any visit to La Coruña Province is the fishing port of Finisterre - literally Land's End in Spanish.

The coast on the Cabo Finisterre peninsula is lovely and it's become the custom in recent years for pilgrim's to Santiago de Compostela to continue the 90 kilometres on to the coast and burn their clothes and shoes at 'the end of the world'.

Wherever you go in La Coruña Province, you'll find some great places to eat - Galician seafood is celebrated throughout the world.
