Giving a penalty is possibly the referee's most crucial decision - so much depends on it.
And isn't a penalty shoot-out exciting yet depressing? Your team's play a great game and then they go and lose on penalties.
A penalty is given against the team that commits one of the ten fouls that are sanctioned with a direct free kick. |

For more information on direct
free kicks, see the Breaking the Rules page.

Taking A Penalty
Apart from the goalkeeper and the player taking the kick - who should have already told the referee, that HE is taking the penalty - all the other players
must be at a distance of 9.15 metres and be outside the area.
The goalkeeper can move his feet but has to remain on his goal line until the ball has been
kicked.
The ball must always be kicked forward and the player taking the penalty can only touch it once.
If he touches it twice, the referee should give an indirect
free Kick against his team.
A Position Kick
Just like the goal kick and the kick-off, the penalty is a position kick. No matter where the foul has occurred, a penalty is always taken from the
same place - the penalty spot.
The International Board Thinks of Everything!
A player takes a penalty and the ball bounces back off the post or crossbar - if HE touches the ball again, the referee blows an indirect free kick against
his team.
However, if one of his teammates kicks the ball and scores, the goal counts as valid.
A Bit of History
The penalty kick was introduced into the game in 1891 by the Irishman William McCrum.
Did You Know . . . ?
The first team to be knocked out of the European Cup on penalties was Olymique de Marseille in a game against Chechoslovakian side Spartak
Trnava in the 1970-71 season.
You Are The Ref
Under what circumstances do you give a penalty shoot-out?
In Cup Competitions when the final result after extra time is a 0-0 draw, there's normally a shoot-out - in most competitions these days, away
goals count double so if it's a score draw, there's normally a clear winner.
The team the kicks first or second is decided on the toss of a coin - the winning team captain can choose. Only players that are on the pitch at the end
of the game can participate. Each team takes five penalties and the team that scores the most wins the game. If it's still a draw, the penalty kicks
continue until one team has a one-goal advantage after having taken the same number of penalties as the other team.
It can get pretty hairy sometimes!!!
Are You A Player, Coach or Parent?
As I do more and more research on the Internet on football-related topics I come across an ever increasing number of fantastic resources. Here are a
few of the best ones I´ve found so far but with time this could turn into a complete section on different aspects of the art of playing and coaching.
Blast The Ball is quite simply the best video available for learning all about kicking a soccer ball –
covers everything from techniques, aerodynamics, parts of the ball etc. The promotional video is certainly worth watching as it is a lesson in itself.
Total Soccer Fitness is a free fitness course that comes in five
email instalments and is ideal for players, parents and coaches alike.
Soccer Tutor is a set of 250 Soccer Drills endorsed by Adidas,
Umbro and Leyton Orient amongst others. If you coach a youth team and want to work on their soccer skills, this selection will keep you in
ideas for season after season as your players advance from beginner to professional. It´s particularly useful if you plan on taking your your
FA or UEFA coaching licence and even if you're only interested watch the demo video – it's excellent. The guy that does the voiceover is so obviously a football
professional. Game of two halves, innit?
The Fastbreak Soccer Practice Book Although not quite as intuitive as
Soccer Tutor also contains Soccer Drills, this ebook is worth having a look at if only for the free Training Schedules available in PDF format.
Elite Soccer Coach is a very handy guide for football coaches and comes
with two more ebooks on Fitness and Formations.
