All About Pontevedra Province

Where To Stay and What To See And Do

Blessed with the best weather in green Galicia, Pontevedra Province is a lovely area.

With 2,000 plus hours of sunshine a year, the region remains a well-kept secret.

So if you're searching for peace and tranquility, you'll certainly find it here in Pontevedra's historic towns, green countryside and golden beaches.

The main feature of the coastline are the Rias Baixas - large inlets much more reminiscent of the west coast of Scotland or Ireland than the Costas of Spain, and Pontevedra is home to three of the nicest in Galicia - the Ria de Arousa, the Ria de Pontevedra and the Ria de Vigo.

For long stretches of beautiful white sand and shallow safe swimming waters, you really can't beat Sanxenxo, the Ria de Arousa and its beaches - the Playas de Melide, de Lapaman and de America.

It's the northernmost of the province's Rias and as its also furthest away from the major cities, the countryside is particularly picturesque.

The provincial capital Pontevedra is a lovely city - it sits on its own ria and is bisected by the River Lerez. The old town is particularly nice with its winding alleys and pleasant squares, which are known as Prazas in Galician.

Vigo with a population of some 300,000 - which makes it the largest city in Galicia - has still not been exploited by the tourist trade. I strongly recommend a visit, however. It's got lovely museums and buildings, an impressive port, great beaches and its seafood restaurants really are something to write home about.

You should also visit the walled monastery town of Tui, which sits right on the border with Portugal, and the nearby mountain nature reserve of Aloi is a perfect spot from which to contemplate the Vigo estuary and the Douro valley.
