Rayo Vallecano

With all due respect to their fans, I find it a little difficult to take Rayo Vallecano completely seriously - there stadium is on a street named after a clown and the club's association with the Ruíz Mateos family make them an inevitable laughing stock.

Traditionally, Madrid's third club, they've gone down in many people's estimations since Getafe's unexpected rise.

In the eighties and nineties, Rayo were a typical Spanish yo-yo team - moving between Primera and Segunda - and there most successful season came in 2000-01, when they reached the UEFA Cup quarter-finals.

However, disaster struck at the end of the 2002-03 season, when they were relegated to Segunda, and things went from bad to worse a season later as they went down to Segunda B.

They were in the Spanish third tier for four seasons. Fortunately, they won promotion to Segunda A at the end of 2007-08 and are still in with a chance of going up to Primera at the end of this season.
