RCD Espanyol

2009-10 In Cornellà-El Prat

2008-09 was a difficult season for RCD Espanyol - they spent most of in the farolillo rojo position at the bottom of Primera División.

Espanyol finally finished tenth owing to good run over the last two months and and a job well done by Mauricio Pochettino - their third coach of the season.

The Pericos start 2009-10 in an optimistic frame of mind.

They have just opened their new UEFA 4-star rated stadium in Cornellà-El Prat - just outside Barcelona.

Pochettino seems to be making his mark and has taken the captaincy away from club legend Raúl Tamudo.

This season he has a young talented side that counts on Ivan de la Peña and new Japanese signing Nakamura among its ranks.

A season ago RCD Espanyol were one of my hot tips for European places, let's see if they can live up to expectations in 2009-10.

Watching RCD Espanyol

As the 40,000-capacity Estadi Cornellà-El Prat has only just opened, I haven't had the chance to pay a visit yet - but from the photos it looks a great improvement on the Olympic Stadium.

For most games, getting seats on match day will be generally fairly easy - the obvious exceptions are the games against FC Barcelona and Real Madrid.

The stadium is located ouside Barcelona in the town of Cornellà very close to Barcelona Airport.

As Cornellà is an unexceptional satellite town, I would recommend staying in Barcelona or at Sitges on the Costa del Garraf. The stadium is well-served by public transport - metro and ferrocarrils - and apparently there will be good parking facilities by the time the season starts.
