Real Sociedad

I have to say that it pains me profoundly to see Real Sociedad in Segunda - I want to see them in Primera where they belong.

They're one of the few clubs to have won La Liga - in 1981 and 1982. They've also won the Copa del Rey twice - in 1909 and 1987.

However, being a football fan my feelings for the club are much more emotional. Apart from the fact that my good friends Sergio and Iñaki - who I watch most Barça games with - have Real Sociedad as their second team, John Aldridge was the first foreign player to play for them in 1989 and John Toshack has spent three periods with the club as coach.

As recently as 2003, they finished second in La Liga and the following season got to the last sixteen of the Champions League. However, disaster struck at the end of 2006-07 and they were relegated to Segunda.

Unfortunately, the club is suffering from a serious financial crisis and a return to Primera in the forseeable future looks unlikely.

But, as I've already said, I want to see them back - if only because the Basque derby against Athletic Club de Bilbao is such a bitterly-competitive jewel of Spanish football.
