Seville Province

Quite possibly the main attraction of Seville Province is the city of Seville itself - the Alcázar, the Giralda tower and the Cathedral are just some of its best-known monuments and reflect Sevilla's continuing importance throughout centuries.

The city is now third - behind Barcelona and Madrid - as a destination for city breaks probably because it has managed to find the right balance between the modern and traditional.

Sevilla's famous Semana Santa celebration and procession at Easter or its continued flamenco feel - embodied in the Sevillanas dance - are just two examples of this.

For lovers of history, one of the delights of the province is its Roman legacy, and the Roman ruins of Itálica - birthplace of Roman emperors, Trajan and Adrian - is definitely worth visiting.

Sevilla Province is also surprisingly green, and contains a large section of the Coto de Doñana National Park. The park is home to home to an amazing array of flora and fauna, including the Spanish Imperial eagle and the Iberian lynx - which are both endangered species - and the birdlife of its marshes and marismas will delight any ornithologist.

Further inland, you'll find the Sierra del Norte Natural Park, which is made up mainly of oak and cork trees and is great for rock climbing or hiking. If you're planning on exploring, make sure you see the Cascadas de Huéznar waterfalls or the impressive Cartuja de Cazalla.

So Seville Province is much more than its capital city, and you should really get out and explore. In fact, a good way to start would be to take a boat trip along the River Guadalquivir out to La Campiña - you'll be back by evening for tapas and drinks in the capital.

Football in Seville Province

Two clubs tower over football in Sevilla Province - Sevilla FC and Betis Balompie. Although equally matched historically, Sevilla are dominating at the moment. They finished third in La Liga and will be playing in Europe in 2009-10 whilst Betis finished third from bottom and will playing in Segunda.

They're probably relieved not to have to play Sevilla Atlético - that would really add insult to injury - as Sevilla's B team got relegated to Segunda B in 2009.

There's also a very health semi-professional and amateur scene in Seville Province with many clubs in Group 10 of Tercera and regional Federación Andaluza de Fútbol competitions
