In rugby there are fifteen players on a team; in basketball there are five; in volleyball, six; in handball, seven . . . but when it comes to soccer players, there are eleven . . . and let's not forget the substitutes.
If you arrived here by accident, this page is about the Rules of Association Football with regard to the players.

Twenty Two Soccer Players
Matches are always played between two teams made up of eleven soccer players, including the goalkeeper. An official match
cannot be played if one of the teams has less than seven players.
Substitutions
According to FIFA, in an official competition, there can be a maximum of three substitutions. In friendly games, the two teams can change
up to six players. However, many leagues and competitions apply a completely different set of rules!
The referee must be informed before a substitution can take place and play has to be stopped first.
A player who has been substituted can't return to the field of play.
Any field player can substitute the goalkeeper as long as the referee has been informed and play has been stopped.
Strange Numbers
Numbers on shirts are obligatory but there are no rules about which number! A player or club has complete freedom to choose any number between 1 and 99. However,
in most official competitions, each player wears the same number from the start to the end of the championship.
Did You Know . . . ?
A referee can give a player a yellow card or even send him off BEFORE he comes on the pitch. He can also give a player or yellow card or send him off BEFORE
the start of a game. If this happens the coach has the right to replace the sent off player with one of the substitutes. However, if a player gets a red card
during the game, a substitute cannot replace him.
Why are there eleven soccer players?
Teams have eleven players because in the 19th century - when football was just beginning - classes at the English 'public schools' (which are really
private schools) had ten pupils. Early games were often one class against another - so ten pupils plus the teacher makes eleven players.
Internet Resources for Soccer Players
As I do more and more research on the Internet on football-related topics I come across an ever increasing number of fantastic resources. Here are a
few of the best ones I´ve found so far but with time this could turn into a complete section on different aspects of the art of playing and coaching.
Blast The Ball is quite simply the best video available for learning all about kicking a soccer ball –
covers everything from techniques, aerodynamics, parts of the ball etc. The promotional video is certainly worth watching as it is a lesson in itself.
Total Soccer Fitness is a free fitness course that comes in five
email instalments and is ideal for players, parents and coaches alike.
Soccer Tutor is a set of 250 Soccer Drills endorsed by Adidas,
Umbro and Leyton Orient amongst others. If you coach a youth team and want to work on their soccer skills, this selection will keep you in
ideas for season after season as your players advance from beginner to professional. It´s particularly useful if you plan on taking your your
FA or UEFA coaching licence and even if you're only interested watch the demo video – it's excellent. The guy that does the voiceover is so obviously a football
professional. Game of two halves, innit?
The Fastbreak Soccer Practice Book Although not quite as intuitive as
Soccer Tutor also contains Soccer Drills, this ebook is worth having a look at if only for the free Training Schedules available in PDF format.
Elite Soccer Coach is a very handy guide for football coaches and comes
with two more ebooks on Fitness and Formations.
