Essential Spanish Football Books

Although many fantastic Spanish football books have been written about in English, Spanish and other languages, from the point of view of a football fan visiting Spain or someone who comes on holiday and wants to know more about Spanish football, there are only two that I consider to be really ESSENTIAL reading . . .

Morbo: The Story of Spanish Football by Real Sociedad fan and 'When Saturday Comes' journalist Phil Ball

and . . .

The Rough Guide to European Football by Peterjon Cresswell and Simon Evans - two well-travelled authors who really know their stuff.

Morbo: The Story of Spanish Football

Morbo is without doubt one of the best - if not the best! - Spanish Football books ever been written. If you want to understand the bitter rivalries that underpin the glorious football played in La Liga, you've got to read Morbo.

From the founding of Athletic Club de Bilbao in 1898 along with FC Barcelona and Real Madrid around the same time, author Phil Ball uses the Beautiful Game as a metaphor for Spanish history in the 20th century.

Set against the backdrop of the Spanish Civil War and 36 years of Franco's dictatorship, football itself became an expression of the ambition of the regime and of the hopes and fears of Spain's 'minority' nations - the Basques and the Catalans.

If you want to understand Spain and appreciate why football is followed with such passion here, you really must read this book. It's a complete revelation!

The Rough Guide to European Football

Whilst not uniquely Spanish in scope, The Rough Guide to European Football is certainly essential reading for anyone hoping to enjoy the Beautiful Game in Sunny Spain!

The book covers all of Europe's major leagues and the importance it attaches to Spain's La Liga is given away by the fact that it shows Real Madrid's Raśl going for goal on the front cover.

This is a truly comprehensive guide to all of Europe's footballing nations, including Spain. It's packed with trivia so it's perfect for the fan who is stuck at home watching Champions League games and European leagues on TV but it really comes into its own if you're lucky enough to travel.

Along with player and club information, it contains city guides that tell you how to get about, where the stadium is and even which are bars you can watch football in with the local fans - I actually left my copy in a Betis bar in Seville so I'd better order another one before I go on my travels again!
