Tarragona Province is Catalonia's rich and diverse southern province, best known for its marvellous Costa Dorada but with much much more to offer.
Apart from its long golden beaches, the provinces's other main geographical feature is the Ebro Delta and the passage of the river through the region makes
the often mountainous interior a fertile agricultural land.
Furthermore in Tarragona, Reus and Tortosa, the province can boast three particularly fine historic cities.
The Costa Daurada's two main resorts - Salou and Cambrils - draw thousands of tourists every year and, with theme park Port Aventura so close, are
a perfect destination for any family in search of sun, sea and sand.
However, I much prefer the quieter seaside towns of Altafulla and Torredembarra - the beaches are great and as they're less oriented towards international
tourism, the standard of the restaurants is much higher.
The city of Tarragona itself also has some great city beaches and as it's home to the best-preserved Roman ruins on the Iberian Peninsula, is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
In fact, during the reign of Augustus, Tarragona was briefly capital of the whole of the Roman Empire, but you'll soon find out all about that if you visit the
amazing museum and Roman amphitheatre.
Although best-known for its airport, Reus is also a very fine inland town and is an ideal base for any holiday. It was the birthplace of architect Antoni
Gaudí and has some very fine Modernist buildings dating from its period of prosperity at the turn of the twentieth century.
The province is also home to the truly mesmerising Ebro Delta Natural Park - of international importance for 9 of its plants and 69 species of vertebrates.
It's also a stopover point for many species of migratory birds and if your idea of a good holiday involves fishing or birdwatching, the Ebro Delta is
definitely the place for you.
The southern town of Tortosa is an excellent place to stay if you are visiting the Ebro Delta. Its Suda Castle is a national monument and also a parador
hotel, which means you can actually stay in this one time Templar fortress.
The River Ebro has long been Catalonia's southern frontier and consequently, a site of many battles. The region teems with with Templar monuments and was
also the scene of Republican Spain's last stand against Franco and fascism, so anyone interested in the Spanish Civil War will find many sombre reminders
of the events that took place.
It's also well-worth travelling inland from Tortosa and visiting the mountainous Terra Alta region. The painter Pablo Picasso stayed here in the village of
Horta de Sant Joan and the area's angular geology was what inspired him to invent Cubism.
No stay would be complete without a visit to the awe-inspiring Cistercian monasteries of Poblet and Santes Creus in the centre of the province. In medieval
times, the monks introduced vines and improved the agriculture in the region, which along with the excellent fish and meat explains why the food and drink in Tarragona Province is so exceptional.
