Victor Valdes

An Insurance Policy In The Nets

An overview of Victor Valdes during FC Barcelona's triple championship winning 2008-09 season.

Antoni Ramallets won the Trofeo Zamora - for the goalkeeper who concedes the fewest goals - five times in the fifties.

No Barça goalkeeper has come close to the 'Cat from Maracana' - Salvador Sadurni won the Zamora three times at the end of the sixties and beginning of the seventies.

At only 27, Victor Valdes has already won two Zamoras and is in hot pursuit of the two Barcelona goalkeeping legends after the other Barça goalies with one title - Velasco (1948), Pesudo (1968), Miguel Reina (1973), Artola (1978) Urruti (1984) and Zubizarreta (1987).

With two Zamoras and two Champions League titles, Valdes is making a place for himself amongst the Blaugrana legends.

Now he has confirmed his contract until 2014, Valdes has years ahead of him to continue breaking records and collecting titles.

He accepts that every mistake he makes will be viewed under a microscope because his stats are unquestionable.

In 2004-05, he won his first Zamora after conceding 25 goals in 35 games - 0.71 per game - and this season he's won the title again, conceding 31 goals in 35 games - o.89 per game.

Valdes is the Barça player with most minutes in both La Liga and the Champions League.

The only player that has played more than Valdes overall is Dani Alves - because Pinto played in goals in the Copa del Rey.

He hasn't provoked any penalties or received any red cards, even though the 'one on one' is habitual because of the way Barça plays with the defence so far forward.

This is a definite sign of maturity and ensures that the difficult role of Barça goalkeeper is in safe hands.
