Villarreal CF

The Yellow Submarine

Now coached by Ernesto Valverde and led by Marcos Senna and Santi Cazorla, the workmanlike Villarreal CF play some excellent football.

Modest, honest, sportsmanlike, the Yellow Submarine are an example of everything that is good about Spanish football - aware of the crisis and the difficulties working-class supporters have in making ends meet, the club is giving away season tickets to the unemployed this season.

They finished 2008-09 in fifth position so will be playing in Europe once again.

So I'm looking forward to smiling to myself, when I hear some English sports reporter announce that a Premiership side are going to play the 'Mighty' Villarreal CF in the next round of some European Cup Competition.

The Madrigal stadium holds more people than the entire population of the town of Villarreal!

The Yellow Submarine had never dreamed of playing in Primera until their surprise promotion in 1998 and even then, they only lasted a season.

But they were back in the Primera Liga for the beginning of the 2000-01 campaign and then the magic started to happen.

Seventh in the Liga, UEFA Intertoto Champions, UEFA Cup semi-finalists, fourth in La Liga and humble Villarreal were in the Champions League - and what's more they did well!

I will certainly be rooting for them in domestic and European competitions this season.

Watching Villarreal CF

For most games, getting seats for the 25,000-capacity El Madrigal should be fairly easy - the obvious exceptions are FC Barcelona, Real Madrid and possibly Valencia CF games and the later stages of European competitions.

Villarreal itself is a small unexceptional town, so if you're going to a game you'd be better off hiring a car and staying in nearby Castellón - which is a fantastic little town or on the Costa del Azahar coast.
