Xerez CD 2009-10

The Sherry Drinkers of Estadio Chapin!

After a number of seasons just missing out on promotion, Xerez CD won Segunda División in style in 2008-09 and will compete in Primera Liga for the first time in their history in 2009-10.

Coach José Angel Ziganda will depend on the core of the squad that got promoted so it's difficult to predict how they will fare.

In Momo, Antoñito and Bermejo, Jerez have got three talented forwards who were lethal in Segunda but will certainly find it more difficult to slot the ball away in Primera.

Similarly, the defence and midfield are as yet untested in the top tier of Spanish football.

Goalkeeper Chema looks likely to lose his place as Xerez have just signed Brazilian goalkeeper Renan on loan from Valencia.

The Jerezanos are going to experience an important change of level and if they avoid going straight back down and stay in Primera will consider 2009-10 a big success.

Watching Xerez CD

The 20,000-capacity Chapin Stadium is part of a sports complex and has an athletics track round its perimeter.

Tickets for most games should be reasonably easy to come by apart from the visits of Real Madrid and FC Barcelona and possibly Sevilla FC.

The Estadio Chapin is located to the east of Jerez just about within walking distance the city centre. It's also well-served by public transport.

Your best foreign travel option is to fly to Jerez Airport which is to the north-east of the city. You should have few problems reaching the Chapin area via the Jerez turnoff on the Autopista del Sur.

Jerez is a lovely city inland from the gorgeous Cádiz coast. It's the home of sherry, the self-proclaimed birthplace of flamenco and is also famous for its horses - the Royal School of Equestrian Art is world famous. Although not geared towards tourism, you'll find excellent food and good places to stay.
